Where can I buy a dog bed cover?

Online at ClevFUR. Our large pet beds at home have removable covers, but the covers are not actually easily removed. They are specifically fitted for the oval foam basket insert, and after 2 or 3 washes, were extremely difficult to put back on. For years we were placing a bed blanket for dogs over our dog beds, however they always needed to be re-positioned.

Most pet beds don’t have replacement covers as pet bed companies would prefer you buy a new bed instead. However it is becoming more popular to upcycle and renew something we have, rather than throw it away. Additionally, all pet beds are different, different shapes and different sizes, so it is difficult to find a cat or dog bed cover replacement that fits.

ClevFUR cat or dog bed covers are universal and fit round pet beds, oval pet beds, rectangular pet beds and square pet beds. Our unique elastic band design means our covers can fit cushions, pillows, mats, memory foam, baskets, orthopaedic beds, bean bag beds or and can even fit over plastic beds.

You can buy a ClevFUR pet bed removable cover that would fit your pet’s bed from our website, where we offer free delivery for orders over $100 NZ wide and we run regular discount promotions through Facebook.

What is the best fabric for a pet bed cover?

ClevFUR has tested many different fabrics for cat and dog bed covers. Cotton was the first material to be investigated, and although organic and natural it was thin and stained easily. Polar fleece was investigated next as it is great at being water resistant and can be washed over and over again without deteriorating, however polyester did not stretch over any pet’s bed shape.

We believe the best cat or dog bed cover is a warm cover that washes well and stretches to fit any pet's mattress shape, therefore we chose a textured spandex and polyester fabric. Although our pet mat cover fabric is not organic cotton, it would provide more comfort to your pet, last longer and be easier to keep clean.

Our covers are great for protecting your pets bed after surgery, so if your cover has blood, urine, vomit or poo on it a cold wash is recommended. To remove mud we recommend you rinse your cat or dog bed cover in cold water then wash in warm water.  For any oily stains wash your pet bed cover replacement in warm water.

There is no need to iron our pet bed sheets as the fabric we have selected should not crinkle. If it was to crease, you would be stretching it over your bed for extra large dogs, bed for large dogs, bed for medium dogs or bed for small dogs, so the creases should go away naturally anyway.

Best Dog bed covers for Incontinence / Best Dog bed cover for pee?

Most dog beds that are waterproof, are not very warm or luxurious for your pet, particularly for older dogs or cats that you want to keep warm. ClevFUR bed pet covers can fit over any waterproof dog bed or cat bed. The designer textured fabrics trap your pet’s heat and are great at keeping your dog or cat bed warmer.

We believe the best combination is a waterproof pet bed with a ClevFUR bed sheet over it. Our sheets are not waterproof, but they make washing yours pets bedding easy, and add a touch of luxury to your waterproof bed. DIY Dog Bed Cover / How to make a Dog Bed cover?

ClevFUR has been through the journey of making our own pet bed covers. We found that the best solution was to make a fitted sheet style cover, as it would fit any pet bed shape. Although we also found that buying the fabric for a DIY pet bed cover can be expensive, buying one of our covers would be cheaper and easier.

The following is general instructions on how to make a DIY dog bed cover (or bed sheets for dogs or cats), but as all pet beds are different this methodology is generic.

How to make a dog bed cover ClevFUR

  1. Select your material. ClevFUR covers stretch to fit many bed shapes, and use a fabric that has spandex in it.
  2. Trace the shape of your pet’s mattress onto your material, remove the bed and expand the traced shape by 10cm in all directions.
  3. Measure the height of your pet’s bed and the circumference/perimeter of the piece of fabric you have cut in step 2. These two dimensions can be used to make a rectangle shape. Add 30cm to the height (to wrap around underneath the bed, and allow for the elastic hemming) and add 10cm to the perimeter (to allow for stitching).
  4. You would now have a piece shaped like your pets bed (top piece), and a long rectangular piece (the sides).
  5. Fold over the rectangular piece along the long edge fabric to fit your elastic (allow an additional 0.5cm so you can easily fit your elastic) and fold over the raw edges and pin the fabric in place. Then sew along the edge of the fabric. It is recommended that your elastic is at least 1.5mm thick so the cover keeps its shape. Make sure you leave the ends open to feed the elastic in later.
  6. Sew the rectangular piece along the opposite long edge to the top piece. I would sew this twice to make sure the stitching withstands your pet’s movements. Cut off any excess fabric, remembering to allow for sewing closed the elastic’s hem.
  7. Measure the length of the elastic you need. It is recommended that the elastic draws the bedding for dog or cat bed in by approximately 15cm.
  8. Feed in the elastic into the hem you made in step 5, then sew the ends together. Then finish by sewing closed the hem.

ClevFUR found that the cost of material is quite expensive in New Zealand, and you may require several meters to make a pet bed cover replacement. We get our covers made in bulk so they are very affordable so you do not have to make a cover yourself.

What is the best dog bed to buy in NZ?

The best dog bed depends on your dog’s natural sleeping position. But generally a short haired dog likes to curl up, so would be better suited to a round or oval dog bed, and a long haired dog likes to spread out a bit and would be better suited to a rectangular mat. Some beds have sides, this would better suit a dog that likes to curl up and sleep. It would be best to observe your dog/puppy's behaviour before investing in an expensive bed.

We recommended that you also buy a ClevFUR dog bed washable cover when you get a new bed. Our dog bed covers can fit any bed shape, and would prolong the life of your new pet bed.

Can a dog bed go in a washing machine? How to wash a dog bed that doesn’t have a cover?

Some pet beds can go in the washing machine, however the stuffing tends to get a bit lumpy and they take a long time to line dry. So getting a cover for your pets bed that can be put in the washing machine and quickly dried, instead of your pet’s entire bed, would save you time and prolong the life of your cat or dogs bed.

Where to find a dog bed to reduce anxiety?

In some cases, a pet's anxiety is linked to them missing their owner, or not understanding why their owner has left. Rather than buy another bed for your pet, try placing a used t-shirt under your ClevFUR cat or dog bed removable cover. They would be able to smell you when you are not home and ClevFUR's bedding is great at keeping your dog or cats bed warmer which may also reduce anxiety too.

What is the best bed for a dog crate?

Generally, a rectangular bed is best for a crate. You would want one that is durable (for dogs that chew through their beds) and one that perfectly fits the floor area of your crate. As it is likely that your dog will spend a fair bit of time in their crate, a well stuffed mattress is a good idea. Orthopaedic dog beds are a great choice for both young and old dogs, however they can be expensive. Memory foam beds would be the next best option. Some puppies and older dogs can have bladder control issues, consider getting a waterproof dog create pad.

But one of the key features of a pet’s bed is the cover, to ensure it is easily removed and washable. Fur, drool, fur oils and mud will build up on your pet’s bed. This would become smelly over time and make your dog smelly. ClevFUR found that the missing feature of a dog bed with cover is that the ‘removable covers’ are not very easily removed, washed, dried and replaced. If you find a bed that fits your crate, but does not have an easily removed and washable cover, protect your pet’s bed with a ClevFUR washable pet bed cover.

Dog bed vs dog mat?

Padding your pooch is always best. Dog bed thickness should match your dog’s weight. The heavier your dog, the thicker their pet bed mattress should be.
